Personal Statements
What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
I think that one of my greatest skills is my listening skills. It comes naturally to me to pay attention when someone is speaking. By having good listening skill I get all the information I need to do the task that was assigned to me. Not only that but I am able to perform the task well. Over time learning facilitators began to give more and more oral lectures which meant that the learners had to pay attention. Here is where my listening skills came in. Listening and taking notes come hand in hand and really helped me throughout high school. When I took a quiz after a lecture I was able to demonstrate that my good listening skills paid off.
Describe how you have taken advantages of significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced?
One of the biggest advantages we had this year was personalized learner time, PLT. This is basically an extra period that we get to either catch up on work, finish a test or simple work ahead. It was a great opportunity I didn’t plan on wasting. Sometimes the 90 minutes we get in each class isn’t enough and that’s when PLT came in really handy. There have definitely have been several barriers that I have had to overcome like living far away from school and at some points not having enough money to buy the materials necessary for school . I have a family of 7 and it is very difficult for my parents to buy all the things necessary to send me and 4 siblings to school. When I turned 15 I was able to get a job which helped me little by little to help my parents. Now they only need to worry for my siblings because thanks to my job I am able to buy my own materials and other things I need. Living far away from school was also a big barrier because my parent’s works and we had no ride. Most of the time I woke up early and walked but sometime I woke but late which made me late to school and sometimes I missed whole periods just because I didn’t have a ride to school. I was also able to overcome that by learning how to dive.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
I believe that the biggest challenge I had to face was explaining to my parents that high school isn’t just going to class and getting good grades. Trying to make them understand that clubs and extracurricular activities are one of the main things colleges look at was very difficult. My two older siblings didn’t participate in any clubs or activities which my parents think even more that they were unnecessary. One of my classes, leadership, makes me have to participate in activities to pass the class. It took a while for my parents to understand but with the help of my aunts and sisters they finally understood that it was something I needed.
What is the one thing you think sets you apart from other candidates?
I think that one thing that really sets me apart is that I am very independent and in a good way blunt. I see the world in a very optimistic way and always try to make other people smile. All the problems I have faced have made me more determined and independent. I know how to solve and handle my own problems and I love helping other people with theirs. Most people break down or simply can’t handle stress and problems but I think I am able to think logically and solve anything that is thrown at me. That and many other things make me think that I am a great candidate and stand out in the crowd.
